Functional range conditioning
What is FRC?
Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) is a comprehensive system of mobility and movement training that focuses on improving joint health, increasing flexibility, and enhancing overall physical performance. Developed by Dr. Andreo Spina, FRC combines scientific principles and research-based techniques to help individuals achieve optimal mobility and function in their joints.
Key components of FRC include:
- Joint Health: FRC places a strong emphasis on maintaining and improving the health of the body's joints. It targets the mobility and function of specific joints to reduce the risk of injury and enhance overall joint longevity.
- Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs): CARs are a fundamental part of FRC, involving controlled, circular movements of each joint through its full range of motion. These exercises help assess and improve joint mobility while promoting better motor control.
- Progressive and Regressive Angular Isometric Loading (PAILs and RAILs): FRC incorporates these techniques to strengthen muscles around a specific joint at various angles. This helps improve joint stability and control while expanding usable range of motion.
- Functional Range Release (FR Release): Similar to myofascial release, this technique aims to release tension in the connective tissues and muscles surrounding a joint, allowing for greater movement and reduced pain.
- Targeted Stretching and Mobility Drills: FRC includes a variety of exercises and stretches tailored to specific joints and muscle groups. These drills help address limitations in mobility and improve functional movement patterns.
FRC is often utilised by athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and individuals seeking to enhance their overall physical performance and prevent injuries. It can be particularly beneficial for those recovering from injuries or surgeries as part of their rehabilitation process.
To experience the full benefits of Functional Range Conditioning, it's beneficial to work with a certified FRC practitioners. We're lucky to have Joe O'Brien at Sports Physio Lab, who can provide personalised guidance and create tailored FRC programs based on your specific goals and needs. FRC aims to promote better joint health, increased mobility, and a higher level of functional fitness, ultimately helping individuals achieve their peak physical potential.
